In 2020, for the first time since World War II, the Kentucky Derby was canceled. As the bourbon sponsor of the official mint julep of the Derby, Old Forester was at a loss for what to do. So we created a new derby. With turtles. And no media budget.
The Kentucky Turtle Derby was a heavy content play, coming to life on Old Forester's social channels and streaming live on YouTube on May 2nd, 2020. It was picked up by SportsCenter and hundreds of other media outlets, leading to an 825% increase in brand reach, 607% increase in brand mentions, 123% increase in sales, and a BILLION earned impressions.
